In Asian countries, you have to bow down when you greet, when you pass in front of or walk by an elderly person as a sign of respect. This does not exist in western civilization. You don't have to bow down when you are in America or in western countries, but regardless, the idea is to respect those who are older than you, especially those who are much much older than you. The Native American Indians highly respect their elders because they seek the wisdom and experience of these elders prior to making any critical decisions, etc.
Show respect.
